25 Year Old Lessons

How many times must we choose to be good? Like me, Amaziah is 25 trying to do the right thing.

Amaziah attempts to follow the law without much effectiveness. When he tries to fund his vision with a strong army,  a wise man advises Amaziah that God is not with his investment.

Amaziah becomes scared of all that he will lose. He is unsure of what he should do. The man of God says not to worry because there is a bigger supply from the main source than there is in money.

As the story continues, the leader did not die in peace. Amaziah was put to death by his enemies.

Here are key points to remember.

  1. Develop a pure heart for God. No, you don’t have to perfect; but please examine your heart & intentions in all that you do.
  2. When we sin – it weakens our effectiveness. Thank God for Jesus who gives us all mercy and grace.
  3. Materialistic supply (ie money, cars, homes, etc.) does not make up for sin and evil.
  4. Be sure of how you treat people. Resentment & bitterness can turn into a serious issue such as preying on your weaknesses.
  5. Sometimes Gods wants us to be patient so that we receive blessings that will benefit us in the long run.

Jesus Had a Favorite Book?

After doing my morning prayer, I began searching for bible scriptures. Somehow I became fascinated with the book Deuteronomy. What a coincidence! I figure out that this was Jesus most quoted old testament reference.

Deuteronomy was written by moses once he helped free the slaves. The book was a set of laws given so everyone could live their best life.

Once Jesus began to develop in his spiritual gifts, he went into the wilderness for isolation. Satan tempted Jesus, but he used this Old Testament book to make him flee.

  • But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ Matthew 4:4

  • Jesus said to him, “Once again it is written: ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’”  Matthew 4:7

  • Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” Matthew 4:10

How amazing is it Jesus used the Old Testament for power? But oh – it get’s better. Jesus Used this book to make clear the most important commandment of them all.

You must love the Lord your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength Deuteronomy 6:5

Why is it important to love the God with all of you heart? If he made everything can’t we love other things first?

When you trust and love God – he will give you a peace through any situation. You don’t have to understand or worry about the next phase in your life because it will already be taken care.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

So I think it’s safe to say this one of Jesus’s favorite Old Testament books.

The Prince of Peace

Isaiah is named “one of the most powerful books in the old testament.” Hardships and trouble have become part of the norm. With kingdoms in turmoil, a prophet wrote Isaiah to give people hope.

For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us,
and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:5-7

Lets break down each thing:

Wonderful Counselor : a person who gives advice. Jesus was going to guide people out of trouble and help fix their lives.

Mighty God: Not only was he going to lead them out of trouble -it was through the greatest source. Before God’s child was sent – there were only temporary fixes. When God gives a gift – it is everlasting.

“Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and your instruction is true.” Psalm 119:142

Eternal Father: Not only was he the savior’s father – he is an “infinite” father. Everything is his child. Because we are all sons and daughters he bless and take care of us. No matter who our earth parents are he is the highest parent.

Prince of Peace : In the New Testament was given a beautiful name : Jesus

What a mighty God we serve. He can deliver us from anything and call us his own. No matter the situation – he will keep his promise and deliver us from any evil.

Book Review: Uncommon by Carey Scott

I applied for a job at a Christian book store. “Well let’s go see about my application and find a book.” I left with a journal and “Uncommon” by Carey Scott

Here are key points of the book

  • 234 pages with large print
  • Paragraphs of personal stories
  • Highlights of uncommon women in The Bible (such as Deborah in leadership)
  • Bible scriptures with clear explanations
  • prayers

The book focuses on how being a Christian woman is out of the ordinary. Each chapter breaks down different principles. My top 3 chapters were: forgiveness gratitude & hunger for God. She had a perfect blend of biblical notes and her life dealing with her health and family.

Entertaining and informative, it was the first book I dedicated my time to in a while. I recommend this book for all levels of paths with Christ. Uncommon had me feeling more confident to live boldly for Jesus.

Old Testament : The Purpose

If the point of living the Christian life is to follow Jesus, why don’t we just begin with that? Why is there an old testament?

After research and clarity – it all makes sense.

23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 (New Testament.)

What better to illustrate this by starting from the beginning? In America we have the saying “if you don’t understand your past, you are bound to repeat mistakes.” It’s important to understand Adam and Eve – Malachi (the last book of the OT) so we understand the nature of humans. It’s not to say we will do things the exact way – it’s more of patterns of society.

Understanding the state of the world before Jesus creates a clear picture of why we needed him in the first place.

But now he has appeared one time, at the end of the ages, for the removal of sin by the sacrifice of himself. Hebrew 9:26

God wanted no man to suffer from sin’s burden. When I do something I know I shouldn’t be doing – a lot of times I feel horrible. Changing from my ways to make things right (repenting) can only be done when I pray through Jesus.

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

The highest rulers of the land – all the money in the world could not get everyone to eternal life. Sacrifices and high priest were a big deal in the Old Testament. Because they had to keep doing it, it was ineffective. Something everlasting was needed to save the world.

16 For God loved the world in this way. He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

Combing the testaments gives a image of our downfalls, weaknesses, yet the favor and potential we have. We all have a super hero : Jesus.

God Will Bless You … But Wait There’s More

I was severely skinny with braces and glasses. My clothing choice was not the best. The car I drove had so many dents in it. And yes – I lived with my parents after the American age tells you should get out.

God can take any situation – any person and turn them into something. He will call the weak and make them strong to show who he is.

Please don’t.

God doesn’t want to just bless you so your enemies can become footstools. It’s deeper than that. You can’t want success just to show off and be selfish in your ways.

Blessings are to change your heart. When your heart is changed you will live for him. Living for him will influence those around you to be closer to him. The more the better to glorify his holy name.

When I lost my braces and started living the American dream – yes my head got a little big. It took my Aunt (the one who told me I need to eat because I’m too skinny) to re direct me back to the lord.

“Sometimes there is spiritual warfare. Sometimes your ego can make you fall right into the enemy’s trap.”

My blessings and accomplishments had become louder than God. And you know what the bible says : he can give and take away.

Luckily I had family around me to talk sense into me. To those who may not have that. Please read this -STOP.- Come back down from your high horse. Live for the creator and source who has blessed you.

12 For a day belonging to the Lord of Armies is coming
against all that is proud and lofty,
against all that is lifted up—it will be humbled— Isaiah 2:12

A Month of Solitude

Small groups for my church have ended for the year. Besides Sunday, my week will be pretty quiet.

Before you feel sorry for me, it’s not going to be a pity party. I’m not going to sit around singing the “all by myself” song with a tub of ice cream. Sometimes solicitude is liberating. This is my moment to connect with God.

I’m probably taking this phase in my life for granted. When I’m a wife and mother – my time will no longer revolve around me. I wanted to share a few things I will be doing to take full advantage of this month of solitude.

  • Reading. I picked up the book “Uncommon” By Carey Scott. I have no idea what I’m getting myself into but the outside of the book looked nice. If you have heard of this book please let me know.
  • Writing out my prayers. Usually I just say my prayers out loud. Call it weird but I feel like when I whisper my prayers they are more sacred. Suddenly I realize, I don’t even remember what I’ve prayed for half the time. Writing it down will help me keep track of everything so I won’t be angry at God for something he already did.
  • Hitting the gym. My aunt called about a month ago and said “you are too skinny – you need to eat!” Now that I can fill out my jeans – I’m going to the gym to keep it all together. This is my temple and I want it to be spectacular for myself and my future spouse.
  • Keeping up with the girls. Just because we don’t meet every week – doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. I enjoyed everyone from my college ministry group. Because I value them, I will certainly keep in touch.
  • Keep up my morning routine: As follows
    • 700 club
    • Billy Graham sermon
    • The Bible Project YouTube channel
    • Any other thing I want to throw in the mix.
  • This takes up 2 hours of my time – but I feel like I can conquer anything when I start my day off right. Don’t feel bad if you don’t do this – do what works for you.

I hope this inspired you and I want to leave you with the bible scripture on my new journal I just bought:

11 For I know the plans I have for you”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“plans for your well-being, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 You will call to me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and I will restore your fortunes[c] and gather you from all the nations and places where I banished you”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “I will restore you to the place from which I deported you.”

Jeremiah 29:11-14
